China commits to a decrease in carbon intensity
(24 September 2009)
Earlier this week China, the world's biggest polluter, made a significant commitment to curb its carbon emissions and invest in clean energy. On the first day of the UN general assembly meeting Hu Jintao, the Chinese president promised a "notable" decrease in the carbon intensity of China's economy by 2020. Although the president did not name a specific target for China, the speech was hailed as an important step towards a succesful climate change summit in Copenhagen in December of this year.
